Maths
Text
At Brooklands, we believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. Our aim is to develop confident, fluent mathematicians who can reason, solve problems and apply their knowledge in a range of meaningful contexts.
Building strong foundations
We prioritise the development of secure foundational skills, particularly in number. Through carefully structured teaching, children build fluency alongside a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. We place equal emphasis on reasoning and problem solving, enabling children to explain their thinking, make connections and develop resilience in their learning.
Our curriculum is informed by the NCETM progression and guidance, ensuring clear, coherent steps in learning and a strong focus on mastery. This supports teachers to plan effectively so that knowledge is built over time and all children make sustained progress.
Learning through talk, exploration and practice
In EYFS and Key Stage 1, children develop their mathematical understanding through a rich blend of whole-class teaching, small group work and practical exploration. Using concrete resources, they are supported to visualise and understand new concepts before recording their learning in books.
Mathematics is also embedded through play-based and investigative learning, where children apply and revisit their knowledge through carefully planned provision and open-ended exploration. This approach strengthens fluency and deepens reasoning in a meaningful and engaging way.
Across the school, lessons balance collaborative learning with opportunities for independent practice, allowing children to rehearse skills, explain their thinking and build confidence.
Using technology to support progress
In Key Stage 2, we enhance our teaching with carefully chosen digital programmes such as Maths-Whizz, NumBots, Times Tables Rock Stars and IXL.
These adaptive tools respond to each child’s answers in real time, providing personalised learning pathways that help to accelerate progress and build fluency. Teachers use the data from these programmes to quickly identify gaps, misconceptions or areas where further support is needed, ensuring that teaching is responsive and targeted.
A love of maths
Above all, we want children to enjoy mathematics. By combining strong foundations, rich discussion and engaging learning experiences, we aim to develop curious, confident learners who approach maths with enthusiasm and are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
