Reception
Text
In Reception at Brooklands, children experience a rich, inspiring and carefully balanced curriculum that recognises how young children learn best. We combine high-quality teaching with purposeful play, creating an environment where curiosity, confidence and independence flourish.
Our classrooms and outdoor learning spaces are thoughtfully designed to provide continuous provision, allowing children to explore, investigate, create and solve problems through meaningful, hands-on experiences. Alongside child-led learning, our skilled practitioners carefully plan adult-guided opportunities, ensuring every child is supported and challenged at the right level. Through warm, responsive interactions and strong relationships, we get to know every child as an individual, nurturing their confidence, wellbeing and love of learning from the very start.
Our approach is both ambitious and holistic. Daily, systematic phonics sessions, based on the Little Wandle programme, provide children with the foundations they need to become confident readers and writers, while small focus groups enable teachers to target learning precisely in areas such as early mathematics, language development and writing. Throughout the day, adults skillfully extend children’s thinking through conversation, questioning and shared exploration, helping them to develop the executive function skills that underpin lifelong learning, including planning, remembering, focusing attention, self-regulation and flexible thinking. Learning is practical, purposeful and memorable, with exciting experiences woven throughout the year, from hatching chicks and caring for living things to educational visits, Forest School adventures, visitors and immersive curriculum projects. Whether building, painting, storytelling, exploring nature or solving mathematical challenges, every day in Reception is filled with opportunities for children to discover, achieve and develop a genuine love of learning in a nurturing, joyful environment.
