Reading
Text
At Brooklands, we believe that every child should leave primary school as a confident, fluent reader with a lifelong love of books. Reading sits at the heart of our curriculum, opening doors to knowledge, imagination and understanding of the world.
We take a carefully balanced approach, developing the essential skills of decoding, fluency and comprehension together. From early phonics teaching through to whole-class reading, children are supported to read accurately, expressively and with deep understanding.
Alongside this, we place a strong emphasis on reading for pleasure. Through rich, high-quality texts, daily story time, inviting book corners and a vibrant reading culture, we nurture curiosity and a genuine enjoyment of reading.
Our children know that reading frequently makes them a good reader, and being a good reader expands their world. Fundamentally, we want our school to be a place where children read for both purpose and enjoyment, and are immersed in high quality books.
By combining strong foundations with a love of literature, we aim to inspire every child to see themselves as a reader—both now and for the future.
Our Reading policy explains the approach we take to foster a love for reading in our children in more detail.
