Children as Leaders

At Brooklands, we believe that every child is a leader. We want all of our pupils to see themselves as capable of making a difference - within their classroom, across the school and in the wider community.

We nurture leadership through everyday opportunities: working collaboratively, sharing ideas, taking responsibility and showing initiative. Whether speaking in class, supporting a friend or contributing to a project, all children are encouraged to develop confidence, independence and a sense of responsibility.

Alongside this, many pupils take on specific leadership roles across the school. These roles give children the opportunity to represent others, contribute to decision-making and help shape school life.

Pupil Parliament

Our Pupil Parliament plays an important role in giving children a voice. Structured in a similar way to a government, it includes different committees, each focusing on improving aspects of school life.

Members are elected by their peers and meet regularly to share ideas, discuss issues and take action. They listen to the views of others, communicate decisions and help ensure that all pupils feel represented.

Through Pupil Parliament, children develop valuable skills in communication, organisation and debate, while learning how to make a positive impact on their community.

The aims of the Pupil Parliament:

• Represent all pupils and includes a fair representation of the school.

• Take time to listen to all pupils and communicate their views.

• Feedback to pupils about what happened about their views.

• Action decisions that have been made or explain why they can’t happen.

Who can be a member of Pupil Parliament?

Anyone can apply for a position. Each member is voted for by their peers after a short presentation explaining why they should be elected.

What do we do?

The Pupil Parliament is supported by Mr Boulton. The children meet bi-weekly to discuss forthcoming actions and update actions completed.

Other Leadership Opportunities

Eco-Warriors

Our Eco-Warriors take responsibility for promoting sustainability across the school. They lead initiatives to care for our environment, encouraging others to make thoughtful, responsible choices.

Play Leaders

Play Leaders support younger children at break and lunchtime, helping to organise games, build friendships and ensure that everyone feels included and happy.

Buddy System

Our buddy system pairs older pupils with younger children, creating supportive relationships across the school. Buddies act as role models, offering guidance, encouragement and friendship, and often work together on shared projects.

Growing Leaders for the Future

Through these opportunities, children at Brooklands learn that leadership is not about titles, but about actions - showing kindness, taking responsibility and making a difference.

By developing these skills and values, we prepare our pupils to be confident, thoughtful individuals who are ready to contribute positively to the world around them.
